Virginia Health Commissioner Resigns
October 2012

Thursday Karen Remley, Commissioner of Health stepped down over proposed new regulations surrounding Virginia’s abortion clinics. Dr. Remley stated that, “Unfortunately, how specific sections of the Virginia Code pertaining to the development and enforcement of these regulations have been and continue to be interpreted has created an environment in which my ability to fulfill my duties is compromised and in good faith I can no longer serve in my role.”

During the 2012 Session of the Virginia General Assembly legislators passed a bill that would require the Department of Health to create new regulations for abortion clinics that would require them to meet strict building standards, much like hospitals. These regulations would in essence put many clinics out of business.

Remley was appointed by Governor Tim Kaine in 2008 and was re-appointed by current Governor Bob McDonnell. She is a pediatrician by training.
