Special Election - 38th Virginia Senate District

A special election was held on March 23^rd to elect a new Senator to the Virginia Senate 38^th District. This District encompasses far Southwest Virginia. The incumbent Senator, Ben Chafin, passed away on January 1^st from Covid-19.

Republican candidate Travis Hackworth easily won the seat with 75% of the votes. His Democratic opponent Laurie Buchwald, a Nurse Practitioner, received 24% of the votes.

Mr. Hackworth has served two terms on the Tazewell Board of Supervisors. He is a business owner, operating some 11 businesses at this time. He is married with four children and four grandchildren.

Swearing in by the Clerk of the Senate of Virginia will likely take place on April 2^nd.
