Governor’s Race Update
July 2017

With Virginia being only one of two states in the country to have a statewide election this year, lots of attention is being paid to the Commonwealth.

Ed Gillespie the republican nominee for governor and Ralph Northam the democratic nominee for governor had their first debate in Hot Springs, Virginia over the weekend. The debate focused on guns, abortion and health care, which was no big surprise. There was back and forth about President Trump. Gillespie says he focused on Virginia issues, however is concerned about having a relationship with the President because of the large amount of defense spending in Virginia. Northam referred to the President as a “narcissistic maniac”. There was no clear “winner” in this debate.

Not even an hour after the debate on Saturday the Republican Governor’s Association gave Gillespie $2 million that is on top of the previous $1 million. The Democratic National Committee sent Northam $1.5 million on Tuesday. They also sent 3 staffers to come help run his campaign. Northam had previously been given $1 million by the Democratic Governors Association. There is no doubt that out of state money will continue to come into Virginia.

In a recent Monmouth University poll of likely voters found the two candidates tied at 44% each.

Stay tuned. Things will continue to heat up until the election in November.
